Ghost Of Achilles – Best Fantasy Of 2010?

This year has been a particularly enjoyable one for the fantasy genre and as we get increasingly closer to 2011 I aim to highlight my pick of 2010. The recently released Ghost of Achilles – True Ogre by Chris Sorrell gets my vote for this year’s greatest fantasy novel. As a very enthusiastic, long time fantasy fan I’ve got to say that after reading this I can honestly say that I’ve found a new ‘must’ read. I don’t write too many article reviews on fantasy novels but I think Ghost of Achilles – True Ogre is worth the time. It has to be said that ‘epic’ is a very overused word in the fantasy genre but True Ogre manages to be just that without seemingly having to refer to all the cliched antics that tend to litter most of the genre’s novels.

It has running themes of revenge, loss and ultimately hope and it’s central characters have a resonating depth to them which serves to enhance the feel of the tale. The plot itself weaves into sub plots/themes but gets wrapped up very snugly at the end in a way that suggests in the most obvious way that this is a two parter. It also has to be said that it has a wonderfully descriptive cinematic feel to it which whisks you away into pure escapism. With the underlying plot of the young protagonist, Ghost, trying to come to terms with the capture of his father, Achilles to the True Ogre, Voldek, we as the reader are allowed scope for an endearingly emotive read. There is a fine blend of melancholy and faith which ultimately produces not only a technically well written book with purpose, but also one that will resonate with not only fantasy fans, but fiction fans as a whole. A gem, and my fantasy book of 2010.
